To preserve the attributes from the original file, do not use the Universal
translator, instead use the Table>Import button in the menu bar. Select your
DXF file, click on Open, then you will be able to check "Preserve attribute
data" in the DXF Import Information window. This will get you the
attributes for that file. Of course this works only for DXF not the DWG
files.
