Well, the "rank" thing is because I run the list and I'm not going to let people sign up any spammers to the list so they get all our mail (which is the actual option we're talking about here). That's not a good solution anyway, and because I know how much trouble that would cause, it just isn't an option. As to limiting the list to members only, we did that once, and it did eliminate spam. However since there are so many people reading MapInfo-L from other sources, and are not subscribed, they howled when they tried to post messages and were rejected. So I took the "members-only" restriction off, and now we get one or two spams a week (Yikes! The Sky Is Falling!). It doesn't bother me anymore, because I've put filters on my personal mail box that just dumps these, so I never see 'em. IMHO, that's really the only way to deal with spam, and keep the list as open as possible. If people want to go back to the members-only thing, then I'd be happy to do it if that's what the majority wants. Oh, and another thing that's not an option (for me). I don't have the time or the interest to moderate all messages, purging undesirable ones before sending then to the list (also, it's too easy to go too far, y'know). If people want a moderated list, then maybe someone can offer one by drawing off this one, and keeping all off-topic messages out? I'm sure there are some who would very much appreciate that sort of service. That way, we would all have more choice, which would be quite cool. As long as the moderated list was a read-only one or at least posted new messages to this one, so at to avoid the endless-looping-messages problems that can happen. But I leave that idea up to some other info-preneur. Moderation is too much work for me! - Bill Thoen Thomas Brix Lyng wrote: > > Bill you wrote: > > Sorry... gonna pull rank.
