Dear List,

I posted this question to ArcView@listbot and MapInfo-L, so I will send
the same SUM to both.
Even though my request was a rather simple one I was impressed with the
number and speed of responses.
It seems to me that TGR2SHP/TGR2MIF from GIS Tools (www.gistools.com) is
the translator of choice out there, so that is where I'll start.
Thanks again to all those who replied...

Original Question:

I am looking for a reliable TIGER file translator.
Any recommendations and personal experiences would be very much
appreciated.
I am specifically looking for TIGER to .SHP or TIGER to .MIF.

Responses:

We use TGR2SHP with good success. You can learn about it at their
vendor's
site: http://www.gistools.com/

The ESRI site has TIGER files in shapefile format. Unless you have
other
qualifications, you can just download them at
http://www.esri.com/data/online/tiger/index.html.

I noticed your posting on the new ArcView-L list. You should check out
our TIGER/Line Map Kit
which includes the 6 Census Bureau CDs and a TIGER to Shape or a TIGER
to MIF translator for $399.
We also sell the Translators seperately for $199.
You can investigate the product at

I believe a company sells a proprietary tool that does what you're
looking
for. They are located at www.gistools.com. They have a free
downloadable
trial version, but the catch is that it doesn't open up all kinds of
tiger
data. I haven't downloaded that yet. And the full version costs 99
dollars
I believe. I work at the Census Bureau actually, and we have a copy of
it
there to access the data we package on CD. It's a nice little GUI that
can
pull off any desired data by county even while the data is zipped.

We have a good translator from GISTools called TGR2SHP. I believe it
cost
$100 - and they are continually sending updates to the software for
free.
They're at: http://www.gistools.com

The best TIGER translator out there is GISTools, by Bruce Ralston. We
have worked with him and used his product in a number of things that we
do.
It's fast, and convenient. He has both a TGR2SHP and a TGR2MIF. You
can
visit his site at www.gistools.com

The two that are well known are Dr. Doolittle (Goes to SHP, MIF, Atlas
BNA and DXF), I think and another one by Micro Map and CAD in Colorado,
which goes to a bunch of formats, (BNA, DXF, MIF/MID, probably shape.)
It is called, the Tiger Translator!
Andy

Go to http://software.geocomm.com/translators/arcview.html there's a
Tiger to SHP translator there.

If you have ArcView 3.1 you can download the
TIGER97 Extension from the ESRI arcscripts site.
It works very well on NT boxes, a little slow on
the 486. This extension is only for TIGER97 and
newer data.
The new TIGER 97 is available at:
ftp://goldrush.berkeley.edu/pub/tiger97/

I use tgr2mif from: http://www.gistools.com/ . In my opinion, it is an
excellent TIGER files translator.
It will do batch processing and you do not have to "unzip" the files;
they will be translated straight from the CD.
There is a demo you can download and try out.

We have used the Tgr2Shp utility from www.gistools.com with excellent
results. It can do our whole county (about 220k records in rt1) in
about
1/2 hr. We tried a few others, but this is the fastest and most
reliable
one we've used. I think it costs like $100.

Try going to www.gistools.com

are you looking for streets and or boundaries?
I have one written that creates Tab files from Tiger94
but only for streets. You can select the style and color
for each type of street before the file is built.
