I hesitate to address the whole list about this thereby adding to the burden
that Marlow is concerned about, but I think I have a point of view that may
be some others share or might comment on.

I find the extraneous mail from spammers to be a pain, but the listserve
moderator likely cannot do much about it without significant added expense
with regard to his hardware capacity or investment in his own time, both of
which I suspect are in very short supply. As far as personal email goes,
likely the list moderator gently reminds offenders that their emails are
more public than they might realize.

I suggest we turn this spam problem into something more constructive. My ISP
recommend the following:

"There are two ways to report a spammer. Contact a company that
specializes in reporting spammers, for example:

http://www.abuse.net/ or http://maps.vix.com/

The second way is much more complicated. It requires you to track down
the spammer's ISP, and complain to them. Once the system is
(tentatively) identified, send an identical message to postmaster@,
root@, and abuse@. The message should be polite, since there is no way
of being certain it will be the spammer who reads it."

I have not tried either and I suspect neither is very effective. Some states
have ways to deal with it - although limited.

Also if there really is Federal legislation pending to deal with some of
this, then perhaps old fashioned letters to your congressional delegation
might help. In my state, both senators and all the congressmen hate the
stuff so likely with our support, changes will be made. If anyone knows any
details about this legislation, I would like to know about it.
In the meantime, the delete key on my machine still works and the MI list
usefulness far outweighs the spam annoyances.
