Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. The best answer I've found to open Geotiffs in MI is to use the MapImagery plugin from ER Mapper. It creates a tab file and its free. Thanks to Charles Huyck, Peter McPherson, Stan Johnston, and Andrew Phillips. If I've forgotten anyone thanks to you as well.
