We have a client using a new HP DesignJet 3000CP plotter, which they bought
with a software RIP called PosterJet, installed as a Windows NT4 printer
driver.
The workspace to be plotted includes a seamless table using the British
National Grid co-ordinate system containing tiles of 8-bit raster images.
These are stored as LZW compressed TIFF, with one colour set to transparent
(using the MI Pro 5.5 method). The display setting is the 5.5 default of
TrueColor. There are a few vector layers under the seamless layer and one
above, plus many autolabels.
When plotted, the raster appears to contain stepped discontinuities. For
example the grid lines running across the roll of paper are fine, but those
running lengthways along the paper are broken up, with short sections being
shifted laterally. Switching from portrait to landscape mode, to rotate the
plot, results in the defect changing from 'latitude' to 'longitude' such
that the grid lines now running lengthways along the paper are wrong.
Has anyone seen a similar effect? If so, do you know of a work-round?
We have duplicated the problem when printing directly to a QMS printer with
no RIP software, so that appears to eliminate both the RIP and the printer
driver and point suspicion at MapInfo 5.5. The same printer correctly
prints the raster image when transparency is switched off.
Can anyone assure me that MapInfo ProPress will work faultlessly in this
situation? If so, I am sure the client would take that. However, I do not
yet know of any reference sites using the DesignJet 3000CP.
Many thanks
Leslie Last
