You would be remiss if you left out Maptitude from your assessment.  It has
the best bang for the buck of any desktop GIS.  I used to use Mapinfo, but
since the beginning of 1999 I have used Maptitude and its bigger brother
TransCAD almost exclusively for my mapping work.
