Andreas:

Check the compression type of the TIFFs. I had a similar problem printing to
an HP DeskJet 550 using TIFFs scanned from an HP Scanjet and stored as
'compressed'. HP did not specify WHICH compression. Printing out these files
ALWAYS crashed the PC used as a print server, because these were the days
when 1GB was a big HDD!

I opened the TIFFs in Paintshop Pro, which told me that they were 'packbits
compressed'. I re-saved them using LZW compression and they worked
perfectly, producing small spool files.

I think I may have set a transparent colour, too, but it was a long time
ago!

It's worth noting that the problem was probably caused by the HP print
driver: when the same layout was sent to an Epson Stylus - even enlarging it
to A3, the spool files were tiny. This points to lazy coding on the part of
HP, but I'm willing to be corrected on this one.
