Well, here's some good news. I've been talking to Frank Warmerdam
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> who has built an open source SDTS library,
and he's willing to build an open source SDTS translator for
MapInfo MID/MIF for us (if I help.) Needless to say, I'm going to
help, and maybe ask a coupel of other heavy USGS data users for
input too so that we get as smooth an interface to MapInfo as
possible. The project is at least a couple of weeks away from
being anything (otehr work and vacations intervening), but if the
USGS can just hold their water for another month, MapInfo users
might be happy to embrace SDTS. 

As news happens on this project, we'll keep you informed. In the
meantime, for those who can't wait, you can check out Frank's
