I often hear or read that data acquisition is the most
expensive part of a GIS implementation. For my GIS class
this semester I would like to quantity this using data for
recent implementations.
If you implemented a GIS in the past few years (<4), would
you mind answering the following questions?
PEOPLE
Number of GIS professionals hired =
Total salary of staff =
Last year's training cost =
HARDWARE
Cost of hardware (Wintel and Mac machines only, no
UNIX)=
SOFTWARE
Total cost of professional GIS software (e.g.,
Arc/Info, Smallworld, FRAMME; no software titles are needed)
=
Total cost of desktop GIS software (e.g., ArcView,
GeoMedia, MapInfo; no titles) =
DATA
Cost of data conversion =
Cost of aerial photography or other remote sensing data=
PROCESS
Cost of consultants =
Confidence in numbers:
All values are good Y/N
Most values are good Y/N
These are wild #$@ guesses based on conversations in
front of the water cooler Y/N
I realize that this isn't very scientific but it will serve
my purposes.
Also, I will summarize results of the survey on GIS-L so
please indicate if I can use information in your messages.
But I will only summarize information from email addresses
that do not end with .com or .net unless the organization
implementing the GIS is named.
Thanking you in advance.
David
