Back in the early portion of the last 1000th of the past millennium, a
company named RETCO, working in the much more efficient MapInfo for DOS,
devised a program called RAMP (Route Analysis & Mapping Package). The
innovative design compared TIGER file maps against postal specifications,
CDS with street map information, "99" inspection form information, an
analysis of deliveries buy block face and an automatic generation of optimal
carrier routes.
It met with the success of trying to present topographical analysis of
residential locations to your average real estate person. For the same
reasons. Trying to unravel the CRRT system makes spaghetti straightening a
pleasant afternoon's work. Even an heroic sword strike would not phase that
Gordian Knot.
The founder's of RETCO went quietly insane as they pursued their goal,
finally fading back into the drifts of Buffalo, NY murmuring "Windows is a
passing fad." The Postal Service devised new ways to take the carrier
routing system totally beyond the reach of any future incursions by logic
and order.
