Thanks to all those who responded to my query. As usual, the responses came
very quickly and helped immensely. Several people have asked for a summary
of results:

What worked for me was the following, posted by Bill Thoen:

>First off, make your tree table mappable by going to
>Table/Maintenance/Table Structure menu and click on the "Table is
>Mappable" checkbox. Then open your tree photo layer and make sure
>it's registered to the real world. Open your tree table on top of
>that image layer and make the tree layer editable. Open a browser
>on your tree table and select the tree record that you want to
>put on the map. While it is selected (highlighted), you can go
>over to the map window and put a symbol on the tree's photo. That
>symbol is now associated with the highlighted row in the browser.

However, I had to hold down the shift key when going from the database
browser to the map window/aerial photo. Otherwise the new point was just
added to the end of database and not associated with the previously selected
record. As I expected, it was an easy solution and geocoding the maps will
be much faster than I expected.

Thanks again!
