Julia,

Try:  http://www.mapswap.nl/  They have had India listed for some time, I am
not sure of the details.  However, if you have the money, I am certain they
have the "methods," none of which are probably legal in India.

For $3,992 (U.S.), there are some 400 (+/-) out of a possible 499 total of
India available in original paper form from: http://www.omnimap.com These
are 1:200,000 scale Russian Topo maps.

I am sure there are other sources that may have bits and pieces in DEM form.
There's Petroleum Information, Inc., that may have something, and there's
Petro Consultants, S.A. in Switzerland that may have something.  If you are
working in a sedimentary basin, you can count on the "oil patch" to have the
resources ... note that the original query in this thread was from a geologist.

The caveat I originally stated regarding the possession of such data while
"in country" was not in jest.  Be very, very careful when diddling with a
country's national security.  Their best tool for maintaining local security
is to have a large public trial of a foreigner for espionage with punitive
measures.

Watch your back!
