It really wouldn't surprise me in the least if MapInfo completely abandoned 
the desktop GIS market.  They have been making strides in that direction for 
the past few years, and it is evident more than ever with the recent press 
releases touting their big money deals over their software.  All the BG 
article did was confirm my suspicions.

They really haven't done anything new with Professional since v4.  The past 
two major releases (v5.0 and now v6.0 beta) are nothing more than patches or 
maintenance releases.  Sure, they've added 3D maps and thematics, but it's 
all eye candy.  MapInfo has done essentially nothing about anything of 
importance, such as improving their data editing tools or map production.  
You still can't do a simple thing such as split a line/pline without some 
manual work or writing your own tool.
