James,

The Global Gazetteer is the ultimate database of world populated places
(plus ports & airports).

We have over 4m places, with unique selection facilities to enable the
production of any sized subset to meet a project or budgetary requirement.

This is one of an occasional series of updates (2 or 3 a year) on the
progress of the Global Gazetteer.

I now have around 4 million places on file. About 70% of these are
geocoded.

There are around 1.2 million postcodes. Pretty well complete coverage of
the world, with the exception of Iran, Iraq & Egypt. Data for ex-USSR
countries and Greece is now being translated - populated places first, and
then smaller places. Major postcode centres are completed.

There are around 300K places with known populations.

I have kept up to date with administrative changes, especially in Poland
and the Czech Republic.

I have added a new field to the database: the CRESTA zone code. This has
been of interest to some of our Insurance clients, so I have included this
as a regular field.

I have provided a broad classification for one customer, the statistics of
which might be of interest:

Group Description Number of geocoded records
1 'Country' capitals 248
2 Administrative centres 26202
3 Places over 1000 population 93996
4 Other populated places 117740
5 Places with postcodes 159146
6 All other places with lat/long 2457000

I still believe that the Global Gazetteer is unique in providing a
combination of:

(a) the largest number of places
(b) the widest range of data
(c) unique selection facilities to identify the 'most important' places in
order to meet project or budgetary requirements
(d) the most complete range of postcodes, and especially geocoded
postcodes

If anyone would like more detailed statistics, a quote or a tailored
sample, please contact me.

Best wishes
Alan Pritchard
