Yannick,

You might want to check out the MapInfo-L archives at
http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l/IndexMapInfoL.htm.
There have been many discussions on labelling and printing within the layout
window. I posted a question about labelling and printing back in 1998. Here are
some of the suggestions I received and I haven't noticed any improvements or
other solutions for placing labels correctly since I posted that question two
years ago so hopefully this will help you.

The question I posted was the following :

I've been trying to print out some maps using the Layout window
in MapInfo. I have many point features which I need to label and I
notice that the size and position of the labels in the map window do
not match the size and position of the labels in the Layout window or
on the final print. Since I can only edit the position of the labels
in the map window I usually have to zoom in and edit the labels losing
my map scale setup in the layout. Also it is sometimes hard to judge
what the end result of my editing will look like in the layout or on
the final print since the appearance of my lables in the map window
    look so different.
Does anybody have any tricks or tips to make it a little easier
to edit labels so that you know what the final result will look like >
without just using trial and error techniques?

Most replies I got expressed there frustration and dislike in the way
MI handles this problem. The following is a simple sum up of the
    suggestions that were offered.

   - Setup your layout window containing the map features you want to
print and the size of the final print. Make a note the the Scale and
coordinate values of the map window in Map > Change View. Set the
Layout view to "VIEW ACTUAL SIZE" now you can zoom into your map
window and edit any labels and toggle back and forth from the Map
window to the Layout window to see the results of your edit in the
layout window. When editing is done set the Map window back to the
scale and coordinate values noted before for final printing.

   - Kind of the same idea as above- select Map > Change View and record
(on paper) the values in each of those fields. Print your preliminary
layout then examine that for the edits you need to make. In your map
window, zoom in and edit the text positions to your best guess of
where they should be in the final print. Restore the original values
to the 'Change View" and print again. Sometimes four or more edits
    like this may be necessary.

   - Another option is to use the LABELER.MBX program included with
Mapinfo. You could use this to convert your labels to Layout texts,
then move them around on the layout.

   - Or use another graphics or illustration program to do the job.

As you can see it looks like it really comes down to trial-and-error
    techniques.

And I know any other suggestions posted here would be appreciated by
    many users.

Hope that helps,

Dan

Hi,

I'm very desperate. I put long hours to manually move labels to
place them where I like them to be. In my mapper, the working scale is the
one of the output. Since I will print a large map (36" x 44"), there is a
large difference between what I see in the mapper window (a tangle of
labels) at print scale and the layout. When I zoow the layout to the "Actual
Size", I notice my labels are not exactly where they should be. Until now, I
solve this snag by changing the map's frame width to a few additionnal
millimeters and change back to the original width. But now, it won't work.
It is very frustrating. I cannot print my map knowing that some labels are
misplace by variable offset. Another thing I've noticed about the labels is
that they disregard the clipping region. The bridge's point are not showing,
but the labels are.

I've ran out of workarounds, and my imagination is dried out. Can you help
me understand?

TIA

Of course, I will sum.
