I have a question that I hope we may be able to get some discussion on.
While MapInfo Professional 6.0 seems to be getting its stuffing kicked out
via the debate about cost of update versus value, a potential neat solution
may also be had for the developer that by-passes most of this noise.

I've been reading stuff concerning Oracle and MapInfo. It looks like we
soon may be able to buy Oracle directly from MapInfo. I'll guess there is
training involved. I don't think our group is ready for the full Oracle 8i
solution the June release of 6.0 offers; it is more than intimidating.

What I am interested in is the Oracle 8i Lite version. This is a scaled
down version that apparently does heaps and heaps, certainly more than the
old worn-out reliance on xBASE style data. We have faced real performance
issues using xBASE engines to get MapX organized. 8i Lite is object
organized and has all sorts of connectivity features like ODBC connectivity
and runs in Windows 95, 98 and NT as well as PalmOS and CE.

We have a fairly neat and low cost mapping tool known as MapX. I was wonder
if we would be able to grab the Oracle 8i Lite as our starter "database" and
build with MapX? Seems to me a nice potential pathway that would allow our
group and maybe yours a way to get on-board the Oracle train? According to
MapInfo, -

"MapX has always provided remote data access via the Open Database
Connectivity (ODBC). And like MapInfo Professional, MapX 4.x will include
Oracle Call Interface (OCI)-based access. Using Oracle8i' s native spatial
indexes and methods, MapX will display and allow editing of native Oracle8i
spatial data. Application developers can use their preferred development
environment (e.g., Oracle Developer, Oracle Express Objects, Visual Basic or
C++) and embed MapInfo' s OCX-based map object for map display and
manipulation."

The old issue of needing the Oracle Spatial Cartridge may put a bummer on us
but I just don't know what the issues may be.

Thoughts?
