Check out http://www.hotwired.com/webmonkey - it's a site done by Wired
magazine (and I guess HotWired e-zine) and has a ton of tutorials on web
design, etc.
You should also take advantage of the fact that much of the HTML that makes
up a given page is readily available to any browser. Use the "View | Source"
menu command and you can see just what makes up any given page. Be warned
however, many pages will either contain some javascript or, if they are
based on a technology like Active Server Pages (asp) you won't be able to
see the underlying code that built the HTML.
Finally, head down to your local bookstore and browse through the books -
find one that makes sense and buy it. Also, get a design program like
FrontPage - this will make your life much easier. You can write HTML using a
text editor (and I do sometimes) but this can be a lengthy process.
