Simple answer to your question is YES, there is a compatibility problem, and you have
found the workaround.
Here are the supported platforms for version 5.5 and 6.0 of MapInfo Pro. Unfortunately
I do not have the data for
version 5.0, though obviously it is not going to be supported on any platforms higher
than those listed for v5.5

Windows 98 & 95
Office 97
MapInfo Professional v6.0
Windows 2000 (tested but not logo-certified)
