Thanks to all who replied to my question (Jacques Paris, Ian Allen, Russell
Mincher, Jason Adam, Julie Kanzler and Stan Johnston).

Several folks commented that this was likely a problem with insufficient video
memory. I have a 16mb video card on my box, but the map output was
somewhat complex, so this seems like a plausible explanation.

The suggested work-arounds focussed on increasing the size of an output .JPG or
.TIF file (part of the File/Save Window As dialog), then sizing them down to
maintain good resolution. This is the solution I chose, and it worked pretty
well. Still, a frustrating state of affairs. In the end it would have likely
been faster to create many separate text boxes and align them all at the end.
Which leads to this question:

Having aligned many text boxes, is there a way standardize the spacing between
each text box (ex: each text box is separated by 2.5 centimeters) ?

thanks again to all who replied....
