One last note about these files - the USGS site gives you the choice of
either downloading one big gzip file containing all of the layers, or
several smaller gzip files containing only one layer each.

With the assistance of Ben Sleeter of the USGS Menlo Park office, we've
confirmed that when you download the individual files they decompress on
download, whereas the big file doesn't. This at least is the case for the
Val Verde, CA quad. This explains why some of those who responded were able
to decompress the files using Winzip without any problems.

Anyway, it all worked out in the end.

Thanks again everyone,

Tim
