Here's a suggestion when pointing out software on the Directions
Magazine Tools site. First, find the link to the tool in the
usual way, and then right-click on the file link. One of the
options you'll see on the popup menu is "Copy Link location."
Click on this to copy the "download" URL to your clipboard. Then
in your message dump out the whole mess like so:
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/default.asp?a=download&filename=GridWinE.zip&id=266
If people click on this, they download the file. However, if you
just want to point to the description page, replace the
"a=download&filename=GridWinE.zip" with "a=file." Now the URL is
a more reasonable
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/default.asp?a=file&id=266. Try
it out, and next time you want to point out a file to someone,
this is a neat way to do it. Note also that if you are
maintaining your own index of files, now you know how to link to
both the actual file or its description.
