Michelle,
Vertical Mapper is the perfect tool for this application, however, be
careful when you interpret the slope values.
VM calculates slope differently to what we are used to in Australia.
We calculate slope from the ratio of vertical displacement to horizontal
displacement (hade) whereas VM calculates slope from the ratio of vertical
displacement to slope displacement (dip) - this can give significant
differences between dip and hade (the terminology used to identify each
method) in steep country.

Eg.

%Dip %Hade
30 32
45 51
60 75
71 100

We get around the problem by using the calculated Dip% to get the required
Hade% and then editing the generated legend to list the values in Hade% - it
would be easier if VM gave you the option to use either method.

Michelle,

I think Vertical Mapper would be able to help you with this problem. By
performing a slope calculation on the DEM file you can easily define areas
that are to steep for a vineyard. In fact you can use the Grid Query on the
results of slope and aspect calculation to determine ideal locations that
are not only at a preferred slope but also the preferred orientation to true
north. These are just two of many tools that can be used for this
application.

Subject: MI: Gradient/slope shading

Hi,

I have a client who wants his elevation data contoured (easy) and
then shaded by gradient. He needs to highlight the areas too steep
for the planting of grapevines. I could use the relief shading to
give a general idea, but was hoping for something a little more
qualitative. I'm running MI 6.0. Any suggestions?

TIA
