Title: GTOPO30 DEM's problems

At some point in the near future we will be releasing a Vertical Mapper utility that will import GTOPO30 DEMs into the VM grid format.

Supposedly Vertical Mapper can import these. I asked them months ago how to do it, and don't recall ever getting any answer.

Subject: MI GTOPO30 DEM's problems

Hi, I'm hoping that someone has had experience converting usgs GTOPO30 tiles to mapinfo grids. I've checked the usgs FAQ page and I think it might boil down to one of two issues. First, the dems are in "Motorola byte order", as opposed to "Intel byte order". The second is that the GTOPO30 format is 16-bit signed integer data in simple binary raster format, while the 1-degree usgs dems are in ASCII format. Could it be that the Mapinfo dem-to-grid tool is expecting ASCII and getting binary? I'd appreciate any advice on this matter.

cheers,
