I found this older message ... Using "microdem" you should be able to create ASCII XYZ
readable into MapInfo ... However it cannot read full tiles, so expect a bit of work
and huge files involved ...:

To get GTOPO30 into Vertical Mapper, first, go to:
http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm
and download and install MICRODEM.
Use the IN/OUT button and then import the GTOPO30 ("hdr" file) and then export as i.e.
ASCII XYZ.
