MapInfo seems to be patting themselves on the back at their apparent
"success" on the stock market, and in the telecom industry, while
completely ignoring the fact that they are below the horizon of commercial
GIS software. A few examples:

1. I had a Natural Resource Conservation Service (which is under the U.S.
Department of Agriculture) employee tell me that he could not put MapInfo
on his machine because it was not an approved Dept. of Agriculture software
program, but that ESRI's products were approved. So I got in touch with
MapInfo's government sales guy who said that he'd look into, and he never
called me back.

2. Point of Beginning (a monthly magazine for land surveyors) has an annual
GIS software review, which has never had MapInfo in it. I emailed MapInfo
with contact info for the magazine. I've never heard back from MapInfo, and
I doubt they've contacted the magazine.

3. Yesterday I got Cadalyst magazine (AutoCAD oriented). The cover story
was on GIS and included features on Autodesk, Bentley, Intergraph, and
ESRI, but no MapInfo.

I am a private GIS consultant without any concrete ties to MapInfo, I'm not
a reseller or a partner, but I like MapInfo. When I start working with a
new client, they almost invariably have heard of ESRI and have a
predisposition toward those products. Even long standing clients of mine
that are using MapInfo ask me questions such as "shouldn't we be using this
or that ESRI product?" My life would be a lot easier if MapInfo would show
their face once and a while; or if just I switched to ESRI.
