The Clip Regions feature of MI Pro has been extensively changed and
improved for MI Pro 6.0. The problems that existed with Clip Region in MI
Pro 5.5 have been eliminated.
The Clip Region functionality in MI Pro 5.5 and prior versions essentially
did an Erase Outside operation. In MI Pro 5.5, there was extensive changes
to Erase Outside and other object processing routines which significantly
improved the quality of the results and significantly decreased th "Object
Too Complex" errors and other errors. In general, for most operations,
this new processing was on par performance-wise with MI Pro 5.0 and
previous versions. However, the way that Clip Region was implemented, it
proved to be noticably slower in many instances.
Clip Region is a display-time action that we wish to have performed as fast
as possible. In MI Pro 6.0, we implemented a version of Clip Region and
uses Microsoft Windows-based clipping. This has proved to be far faster
than even the old MI Pro 5.0 Clip Region. It also has some added benefits,
such as the ability to clip text, which was not possible with the older
scheme. However, the user still has options to either use the old scheme,
or to use a Microsoft Windows-based clip region that mimics the old scheme
(i.e., it doesn't clip text).

Subject: MI Clip Regions in v 5.5, Rectangle property errors
I've run into a serious problem with redraw times in version 5.5 for Maps
that have clip regions. Map windows that used to redraw in less than 10
seconds in v 4.5 now take over 3 minutes. And any minor change to the map
causes a redraw. Performance is equally bad in layout windows that
reference these map windows. I've been in touch with MapInfo technical
support, who admit that this is a known bug, but as far as I know, there
are
no fixes for it yet. If it weren't for the investment I've made in writing
some MapBasic routines (we bought MapBasic for the first time with v 5.5),
I
would switch back to v 4.5.
In the meantime, I've been trying to work around the problem by using 4
borderless, opaque rectangles to mask out unwanted areas. But changing the
Region border property in anything but the cosmetic layer doesn't have any
effect (I always get a solid black border). This makes my workaround too
inflexible, since it wipes out anything outside the nominal 'clip' region,
including labels of items inside the 'clip' region.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thanks for your help,
