Ken,
You could also use your map of store locations to create a set of Voronoy
polygons. Each Voronoy polygon represents an area around a store location in
which that particular store is the closest available.
Once you have done this, you overlap this map with your customer locations
and see which shop is closest simply by looking which polygon overlaps each
customer location.
MapInfo does not supply you with the tools to create Vorony polygons
directly, but several third party tools are available. A time limited fully
functional evaluation version of one of them, Triangulator from Mercator
Geosystems can be downloaded from www.mercatorgeo.nl
