Hi

One way is to use Vertical Mapper, save the GRid file as a ASCII Grid (it's
the same format as ESRI uses for ASCII export in Spatial Analyst and ArcInfo
Grid) and import it directly into GRASS 5 (look at the FAQ). If you are
using GRASS 4, then its a (littel) bit more difficult, because you has to
change the header (VM/ESRII ascii grid's has the coordinate definition of a
cell in the lower left corner, where GRASS uses the cell center). Before the
release of beta5, there was a cookbook on GRASS FAQ and you could try to ask
Marcus Netler about restoring it (it was valuable information).

It's relatively simple, open the ASCII file with a ASCII editor (e.g. PFE,
ASCII GRid files are often bigger the size Notepad can handle), calculate
the new header, save the result and import it into GRASS.

I have used this way (both to GRASS and IDRISI W2 several times), but it
get's a littel boring, so I have a small Visual Basic 6 program to do the
trick - i can send you the source, if you are interested

Subject: MI - Map/Image to GRASS conversion

Good morning Listers,
Does anyone know of a means by which I can take MapInfo map/image files and
convert them to the GRASS format, i.e., a rastar cell matrix accompanied by
a header that contains the matrix's metadata?
Thanks,
Sven
