I have created a new site http://www.total.net/~jakesp/index.htm that is
dedicated to the results of my latest explorations (many will find traces of
their contributions) and on-going research.

Two main areas are presented. The MLC project is an attempt to make MB
applications open to multiple languages in order to increase their
portability and their attractiveness to non-English speaking users. One
solution is fully developed, MLC_INI, with at kit destined to developers or
translators. Several MLC_INI compliant tools are fully described and can be
downloaded free of charge.

The ABC project deals with the Application Backwards Compatibility, that is
the possibility for a MBX to run on a MI installation with a version older
than that of the MB with which it was written. It includes a knowledge base
on the evolution of MapBasic and a solution, even if partial, to that
question.

I have imagined all sorts of developments for this site but they all depend
upon the kind of support I will get from the MI community, i.e. mainly you.
Visit the site, tell me what you think, what to improve, what to fix (sorry,
I am afraid there will be some bugs, I am no expert at designing and
maintaining sites), in which directions to go. I will also need your help to
provide me with information (i.e. completing documentation sets), with offer
of testing grounds in different environments, with your own contributions
that could find their place on the site, with "translations"...

I would like to be able to move this site to a "commercial" server that
would provide more tools than this simple "e-mail" server. I would like
particularly to add a discussion facility in order to make some exchanges
more public while not overloading mapinfo-l with over-specialized topics.
But I will have to see what will be coming.

And for the very practical among you not particularly interested in
speculations, discussions, explorations... there is a direct download page
on which you will find new utilities (they are also listed under "MLC_INI
applications" of the MLC project).

explolin and exploreg that "explode" multi-segment or multi-region objects
in single-segment or single-region ones
clearque that kills all open queries
prefer that creates a toolbar for direct access to Preferences items
mbxver reads a MBX version stamp, finds which might be the earliest MI
version compatible, and can reset the version stamp.

And more will follow soon, new ones and old revamped in the MLC_INI style.

I hope you will find something on this site that will interest you and that
I will find among you some partners for developing such a venture.
