My understanding is that the natural breaks uses a least squares approach to
create ranges that minimize differences between given values and breaks that
can obscure data (i.e. where there are more data values, there are more
ranges). MapInfo will not release the exact formula it uses.
The quantile an equal number of occurrences in each range, to the extent
that is can given the rounding factor and so forth. If you choose four
ranges and no rounding, a quarter of your data should be in each range.
It is good to clone your views and look at all options, including equal
range. I usually use natural breaks and then manually adjust the ranges to
make them memorable.
