Wow, a deluge of helpful responses - I love this list!
Anyway, a few key points I was able to distil from the responses (please
excuse the blatant plagiarism):
1. Advantages of using Adobe's .pdf format include not having to recreate
workspaces each time you want to print a map, ease of distribution to
clients, security features which allow you to prevent copying and/or
printing of your maps, and the ability to combine text and graphics from
several different applications into a single file type.
2. The most common workflow approach seems to be to create "base" pdf
document from the text of your report and then create individual pdf files
for each graphic. These individual graphic files can then be inserted one by
one using Acrobat. There are apparently ways to insert individual files in
batch mode, but I haven't tried that yet.
3. Advice from the list included:
Stay clear of using MI hatch patterns (They don't always look right, and
being bitmap they bloat the pdf).
Make sure you embed all fonts.
Use zip instead of jpeg to preserve quality of images (at expense of pdf
size) - I didn't quite understand this point.
Finest line style when horizontal or vertical may get randomly skipped from
the pdf. Increase line thickness or reduce pdf resolution.
Colour stability. Adobe products as initially for Mac, they fiddle around a
bit with windows colour palette. You can get different results from what you
see in word, Mi or other software and what you see in adobe programs
(Photoshop, PageMaker, acrobat, reader....).
Some problems with region fills (this problem also exists when we are using
postscript sent to at print shop)
4. There also seems to be a problem when using raster backgrounds - I just
tried to print a map which contains a compressed ECW image as the bottom
layer, and the resulting pdf file shows only bits and pieces of the raster.
If anyone has a workaround to this I'd love to hear it.
