Hi Andrew
I guess you could use au small mapbasic program called overview. You setup your first 
window with all the layers you need. After, you run the overview.mbx. In the tool 
menu, you'll have a new menu item to run the setup overview. A second window will 
appear as a copy of the first one. In this second window, you'll have a red rectangle 
representing the map extent of the fisrt window
