The US National Imagery and Mapping Agency has the world database David
mentioned. At:
http://164.214.2.59/gns/html/cntry_files.html My thanks to the taxpayers of
the USA for their contribution :-)
I have downloaded both the Calle and NIMA material for the area I am
interested in (Burma), and created several MI tables- the databases are too
big for one table, certainly on MI 5.5, which I use- it's not happy with
50,000 items- but you can split the data and make several tables.
Calle and NIMA obviously share quite a bit of data, as the majority of their
points coincide, but each has some locations and content that the other
doesn't have- for Burma, anyway. Calle has altitudes, as it is an aviation
related database. I have been to some of the places in the Calle table with
a GPS, and have also, as mentioned earlier, correlated some of the Calle
data with inch to the mile maps. When you plot these points against the
Digital Map of the World, some of them end up in the middle of rivers- but
that may be DMW's fault as much as the databases. On the basis of this, I
would judge that accuracy is generally within a kilometre or less. You
wouldn't want to use this data to sell real estate, but for analytical
purposes, or generally finding locations, the Calle and NIMA datasets are
very useful.
