According to the MapInfo web site MapInfo Spatialware, MapX and MapMarker
now support MS SQL Server.

Subject: Re: MI-L Oracle Lite - a $295 Alternative to Access, DBF, FoxPro ?
Regarding Oracle Lite - It might prove to be an alternative to MS Access,
etc. but it does not have the Spatial Cartridge, for which you need the
Enterprise version. You can, however, license the whole Oracle family -
everything from Lite to Enterprise - for $200 for development purposes.
Also remember that Access, Foxpro, etc. have report generators,
easy-to-build user interface forms and other user friendly touches that
industrial strength databases do not. Comparing Oracle to Foxpro is kind of
like comparing a passenger car to a semi truck. They both have their
place, and their functionality overlaps, but there are some pretty clear
differences between the tools and their appropriate use.
Another low cost alternative is SQL Server. There are a couple "personal"
versions available for virtually free. One comes with Access 2000 (on the
Office 2000 CD under /SQL) and the other comes on the 120 demo CD from
MS. For mid-range applications I find SQL Server much easier to configure
and administer than Oracle, but it lacks any spatial integration with MI.
