It has been a while since I left the ESRI world but I think James is correct
about the default ArcView projection being "Geographic." However, ArcView
does not project on the fly as MI does. Shapefiles have no header info
describing the projection, datum or zones, so it is very possible to open an
UTM shapefile in ArcView - perform some analysis and then realize you are in
"Projection Geographic." You can add this one to the list of 101 reasons why
not to buy ArcView.

Hi James,

I think, though I can't check, that ArcView probably defaults to "Projection
Geographic" when it doesn't know what projection the maps are actually on -
can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case, then you've got two choices - either find out what the
projection really is and use that, or use MapInfo's 'non-earth' projection
instead. The best solution would be the first one if you can find the
correct projection.
