Declan,
If you look in the Mapinfow.prj file, you will find the following:
"UPS North Zone", 20, 104, 7, 0, 90, 0.994, 2000000, 2000000
This means:-
20 - Stereographic Projection
104 - WGS 84 Datum
7 - metres
0 - origin longitude
90 - origin latitude
0.994 - scale factor
2000000 x 2 = false easting/northing
Therefore, your main problem is that you're telling Mapinfo that your source-data has
its origin at the Greenwich meridian (zero degrees)
which is why you end up with your data appearing in the north Atlantic.
What you should do is add a new line to your Mapifow.prj (be careful, and keep a
backup copy - it's not something to be trifled with)
copy the line noted above, then change the origin longitude to a sensble number for
the centre of the map data you're using - this could be
a bit of a guess, but I'd have thought round numbers, maybe -150 or -155 (probably the
latter) for the area you're in.
The standard parallel ? as you can see, there isn't a place for this in the
Mapinfow.prj line so I'm stumped with this one, maybe Cliff Mungier
has a more authoritative view on this.
I suggest you have a go editing your .prj file. Please let me know how you get on.
I hope this helps

I'd appreciate some advice on importing some .eoo files that are
reported to be in Polar Stereographic projection with a standard
parallel at 60N.
The knowledge base at MapInfo.com indicates that the Universal Polar
Stereographic coordinate system has 4 zones, 2 at each pole. When I
import the .eoo file and set the projection there are only 2 options
for Universal Polar Stereographic: UPS North Zone and UPS South Zone.
I assumed that these correspond to the poles so I opted for North
Zone.
Well, my .eoo files were successfully translated (a success, more
often than not I have an error at this stage) but the objects in my
file are coming up between the British Isles and Iceland rather than
north of Alaska.
Does anyone have any insights into Polar Stereographic Projections?
Are there 2 additional zones that can somehow be specified? Is the
problem with the standard parallel being 60N (the MI knowledge base
talks about the projection typically being used north of 84N).
Any insights as to how I might import these files would be welcomed.
