Dave,

Safe software (www.safe.com) makes a beautiful thing called the FME 
(feature manipulation engine). You can not only do translations, but a 
significant amount of processing with it. It is the source of the universal 
translator provided with mapinfo, but the UT included with FME is MUCH more 
powerful.

And yes, it can be batched and scripted.
