Greetings All: Need some help because we're obviously missing something.
We've downloaded the 3 compressed redistricting files for Michigan off the Census WEB
site. They seem to uncompress OK. I only have Excel and FileMakerPro available on my
PC . Excel can't handle that many records, and truncates at 64k records. Our local
FileMakerPro expert tells me FMP just chokes and errors out, seemingly because of the
number of records.
Our Info Sys Division has MS Access, but using the instructions off the Census WEB
site, can't seem to open the files in Access, either. I know if there was a problem
with opening the files in Access there would have been a great outcry. So, there must
be something we don't quite understand, something very simple and basic.
My database skills are very weak to say the least. I can't figure it out, but it looks
like we're missing something very simple, very basic.
Can anyone out there provide us with an algorithm, advice, things to check, points to
ponder, etc??
I've also pushed for a more permanent solution. I want the Info Sys Div to put a
database application (and provide me with training) that can easily handle the current
round of newly released Census data, as well as the larger releases that will occur
later this year and next. Any advice on which database program I should be asking
for??
We're currently using MapInfo 4.52 but are due to update to 6.xx this summer. We'll
also be upgrading the hardware. Any advice on hardware would be appreciated, too.
Any advantage to having a multiple processor system running NT4, MS apps,
Illustrator/MaPublisher and MapInfo??
I "lurk" this list often, reply and ask questions very occasionally. I've believe
I've learned more about MapInfo here than at the Corporate Training sessions. I
appreciate the vastness of the combined knowledge found here, the sense of humor, and,
occasional, the wisdom. I mostly appreciate the willingness to help. I do what I can,
but often just don't have anything to offer. We have a unique "community" in
MapInfo-L. This is mostly due to the "Tone" Bill Thoen set early on. That attitude and
tradition is supported and carried on by a fairly large number of core contributors.
It works well.
Please keep up the good work. And, even if I don't get my questions answered, thank
you all for being there.
