Definitely a tricky question.

The question is "how would you determine where the sign was located"

not "where is the sign located"

I think that makes all the difference, and I think that Anitra Robinson is
on to it, in that the answer to the question is an explanation of how to
determine where the sign is, not simply the name of a place where the sign
must be located. So my guess is that the answer might be something like
this: All of the listed cities are in the eastern himisphere, the distances
listed are very large, and all in imperial system distance measurements.
The southern himisphere cities have the largest listed distances, also.

Maybe the one word answer to the question in Ask Marilyn is, "how would you
determine where the sign was located?":

Geography.

I also agree that we're getting a little nuts about this.

Here's an interesting mapping problem that was in this Sunday's
> "Ask Marilyn" (newspaper) column.

> Say you come upon a sign that says the following:
> Paris 4658 miles
> Moscow 5438 miles
> Tel Aviv 6681 miles
> Hong Kong 7878 miles
> Sydney 8746 miles
> Johannesburg 9092 miles
