I have been looking at software packages to view/query (but not neccesarily alter)
maps on a PalmOS device and have been asked to give a SUM, so here goes...
NB: We only have a small budget so didn't examine very closely the 'enterprise' or
'wireless' solutions.
Mapopolis (www.mapopolis.com)
This free app. was originally designed to market nearest locations of things like
Pizza stores etc... There are free 'maplets' available for the entire USA
(downloadable from the web). Very functional and has a mapconverter.mbx (free if you
ask nicely) allowing creation of maps from MapInfo. Can't view polygons - will
represent features (interesting properties for example) as a grey square. For

MapInHand (by MapInfo Co.)- A wireless solution not suited to my application.
HandMap - from Evolutionary Systems P/L
Price: Free to $US30 (depending on version)
http://www.handmap.net/
Full featured electronic street directory capable of zoom in/out, pan, search
(anything), create landmarks & custom routes. Can show points, lines and polygons, has
layered structure and also you can set display beyond zoom level (x). Also (depending
on version) this software has plug-in functionality (including a GPS plug-in). Works
on both Pocket PC and PalmOS platforms.
Evolutionary also produce software call MapIt - software that imports GIS data (on the
desktop PC) in tables (1 per layer) for HandMap and saves them as palm databases.
This software allows you to set visibility at specific zoom, create parent/child links
between maps (ie: map of US - tap on a state and bring up the relevant state map). You
can even import a bitmap to use as the background! Free to try but you'll only be able
to view small maps on the demo version of HandMap.
This combination (HandMapand MapIt) are my preferred software from what I have seen in
that it and the data reside ON the handheld, it's not too expensive and we can tap on
a house block and up comes the info!
Delorme - Solus Basic
http://www.giscafe.com/cgilinks/go.cgi?ID=440
is a free application that gives users the ability to upload single maps and Route
Directions to a Palm OS handheld from several sources. Users can go to the DeLorme Web
site to access Solus MapMaker, a seamless map of the US, where they can create routes,
zoom in and out, and search by placename, street or latitude/longitude and then
download a single map with Route Directions.
Street Signs 2.5
http://www.trekware.com
StreetSigns 2.5 is a vector-based geographic mapping application designed specifically
for the 3Com Palm organizer and IBM WorkPad. In fact, you might consider them
intelligent or interactive maps. These maps are not bitmapped images or pictures of
maps.
The interactive maps provide real-time zooming, scaling, searching and navigation
throughout a map. The displayed map scale can be used to calculate distances.
I hope this helps elucidate some of the less 'enterprise' focussed mapping software.
Please feel free to correct, contradict or add to this data I have supplied.
I have tried to the best of my ability to be fair and put forward my honest opinion. I
take no liability for other people's use of the information above and/or any
associated loss with their use or lack thereof.
