Drew
I set up a test using Excel 2000 and MI 6 (I think it is without the patch).
The data in Excel (defined as numeric with 6 decimals points) had two
columns with the value
-42.123456 and 88.123456
When I bring that into MI, the values shown in the browser are
-42.1234 and 88.1234
If I then use the format$ command and specify "##.######"
-42.12345 and 88.12345
show up in the browser.
Note that when you look at the table with maintenance, the two
variables appear as type FLOAT. Because it is an Excel file
rather than a .dbf file, you can't change the variable type from FLOAT.
But this worked.
I created a new table and defined the two variables as decimal with 6
decimal places. I opened the Excel file. Then I used Table/Append rows to
Table/
to add the data of the Excel file to the new skeleton table.
The data now show just as I wanted them to
-42.123456 and 88.123456
Hope this works for you.
(Also, this indicates that the data are actually brought into MI as 6
decimal places
even though only 4 -- or 5 -- are showing.) Don't know why the column type
of
float won't show all 6 with the format.

Subject: MI-L MI: fields shortened upon Excel import
As the title suggests, upon importing an Excel file, numeric fields are
shortened from 6 to 4 decimal places. Yipes. Never has happened to me
before, though I've performed the operation many times. I've triple-checked
that the fields are formatted correctly in Excel (to the point of exporting
the file as text and reimporting it to Excel), and that there are no
extraneous characters in the nether regions of the spreadsheet. I'm using
MI6 and select the "Use Row Above Selected Range..." option.
I know that I could simply import the text file mentioned above, but that
doesn't solve the fundamental problem. Are there other subtleties to
importing spreadsheets that I have overlooked?
Regards,
ACP
