This same problem pestered me for a while, as well. There is a small little
quirk. The check mark is a command, not a real check box, per se.
Basically, you check and hit ok to tell MapInfo to save the toolbars to the
current configuration. So, the next time you want to save them, you do that
same thing. Get my point?
Anyway, move the toolbars around to where you want them, click in
the options>toolbars and check the box and hit ok and then exit MapInfo.
DON'T click the x in the upper right-hand corner. Make sure you exit using
File>Exit. Now, start MapInfo again and the toolbars should all be in the
locations you saved them to. (I emphasize "should")

I'll take advantage of the slow traffic too.
I've recently changed machines, and so had to repersonalise the appearance
of all of my programmes, but MapInfo(v6) has been especially pesky. i like
my tool bars along the top of my screen, but no matter how often i set this
as default in the toolbars dialog box, it still insists on opening them
floating. infact, if i go options>toolbars..> save as default and Okay, -
and then reopen this dialog box the 'save as default' is not checked again.
what am i doing wrong?
any ideas? is there some other secret location for the setting of defaults
such as this?
