Putting MapInfo files directly into a handheld (map display) GPS like the Lowrance GlobalMap 100 for on site viewing and use in the field seems to be possible but the route definitely looks complicated to say the least! I purchased Lowrance's I.M.S. (Inland Mapping System) package which has intensive but large scale map coverage of the US and the World. It was MapCreate that I wanted based on articles contained in the GPS Nuts website particularly http://www.gpsnuts.com/Ozi/OziMCJohnG/vector.html. My understanding is that it is possible to transfer Mapinfo data (MIF) directly into Des Newman's OZI Explorer (shareware mapping package for GPS) and using OZIMC (an add on to OZI) to further transfer these maps to Lowarnce MAPCREATE and thence to one of Lowrance's (map display) GPS units. A further review of OZIMC of the process is at http://members.home.net/crh24/gps/ozimcrev.htm A cursory examination of the data structure on the Lowrance IMS cd-rom shows the following structure: Overview (text) *.MAP - giving header info, zoom, centroid, description of libraries and a polygon outlining the map Data (text) *.LIB - covering each of the individual tables or layers along with a pointer to the path that this is found Mapping (Binary) *.CMN which I assume is the co-ords of the points, lines, polygons. Other than the MapCreate software the coverage is of very limited use to me as the detail is all in the USA. Does anyone know if this ,CMN format, is completely proprietary and protected. If not, is the format for it available or is there some software available to convert MI or MIF to it? Rather than GPS, Palm, Laptop I would love to have maps (I have created) right in a GPS so that I can check maps right in place - waypointing changes, etc. and when it comes down to hunting, fishing or wandering it would be very handy to have custom maps in a handheld machine. I have copied and included some screen shots. They show zoom levels of 1, 10, 20. Thanks Roy Summers
