Hi MapInfo-L community,

This is more a discussion point than anything else.

I see a lot of discussion on the list about publishing maps to the web. One
possibility which has arisen is using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and
Vector Markup Language to implement this. I was wondering if anyone has
looked at using Macromedia Flash to implement a dynamic vector-based mapping
environment.

I raise this for a number of reasons:
1. SVG seems to me to be not widely adopted
2. SVG still appears to require a plug-in for most browsers
3. Flash seems to have become the defacto standard for delivering vector
data over the web
4. I would argue that the Flash plug-in is already in wide use, this
eliminates the need for another plug-in.
5. Flash seems easier to develop in and there are plenty of skilled
developers around

Has anyone used Flash for mapping? Any comments on Flash vs. SVG vs.
Bitmaps? Also where do things like MapXtreme's capability to deliver
vectors, or AutoDesk's DWF (Drawing Web Format) fit into this?

Any comments?

Thanks,

Chris Perry
