Overall, we believe it is a great machine with beautiful output
capabilities.
On win 98 the temp plot file can get quite big (for raster/vector plotting)
and space can be a problem. Dany Bouchard of DBx Geomatics used the NT
driver to create plots files for use on our plotter and he mentioned that
the NT driver is much more efficient then the win98 driver.
To handle the hpgl language you need to buy and additional plugin card. This
card also allows you to add memory. In other words you can't send an hpgl
plot file to this printer without the card. I believe the default language
is PCL.
As for the previous 450 model it had the spool on computer option. This was
great for large file that gave memory problems. However this option on the
500 is only available if you have the plugin card I just mentioned.
Another little hitch is that I was unable to get it to plot via the USB
port. I suspect this is something I am doing wrong. Seeing I did not have
the time to trouble shoot this, I have installed it on the parallel port.
We did not opt for the PS machine either. We use the Acrobat Writer to
bypass PS printing. And unless your into graphics art the PS option might be
overkill.
Happy plotting.
