Steve,
If you upgrade to V6.0 it will do exactly what you want. I just ran a test
using a dummy geological section that I created in a non-earth mapper. You
simply have to define a column which contains the path to the file you want
to open. For each record in your geo-section table, you store the path of
whatever file you want to open, including other MapInfo tab files.
As long as your geo-section table is non-earth (in this case it is) then
MapInfo opens any non-registered raster image in a new map window.
What would be nice is a way to control the size and position of the map
window that opens when you execute the hotlink. I guess someone with
Mapbasic knowledge could come up with an idea on this??
Hope that helps.

Subject: MI-L Linking objects to images - How?
Hi There
I have created a geological stratigraphic column for a mine
sequence in a non-earth mapper from colour coded regions. I want the
user to be able to click on a region to link to a photograph, a non
registered raster image table, of that rock type in drill core. Ideally
the photograph table would not be open but would be opened when the link
was activated. I have tried using the Hotlink tool available on
Directionsmag tool list but I was not able to achieve what I wanted. I
am only interseted in linking within Mapinfo and not to other programs.
I am currently running MI 5.5. I believe there are linking capabilities
in later versions, would I be able to do what I want if I upgrade? If
not is there any way it could be achieved. I have found similar queries
in the list archive but no answers.
Cheers
Steve King
