Today's New York Times has a couple of neat maps. They depict data
variables (in this case relating to AIDS) for the US and the world, but
they approximate the actual shape of each region, and vary the size of each
region according to the variable. Each region is composed of blocks in a
grid fashion. And the color of each block indicates a sub variable. In
one example, the color represents the race or ethnicity of people living
with AIDS.
The maps are on pages D4-D5 of my edition, in the Science Times section.
Perhaps I'll call the Times to find out what application software they
