Dear Alex,

What you dream of today is but a dream. Eventually that will be realized
as more and more countries continue to standardize on the International
Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) coordinate system and ALL legacy mapping
is replaced. When will that occur?

Beats me; probably decades.

Each month I discuss ALL of the coordinate systems, ALL of the map
projections, All of the Datums, etc. of an individual country throughout
its history. Each month, different country and sometimes historical
accounts go back to the 1700's.

You can download a couple dozen of my past columns from the ASPRS web site
listed below my signature block. The columns are in ".pdf" files, and they
are free to the public. As new columns are added to the list, the society
takes older ones off the available list. Of course, if you are a member of
the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, you could just
collect the columns through your monthly membership subscription. Old
copies of the journal, "Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing" are
for sale by the ASPRS.

Greetings, List.

I hope someone can help me resolve the following problem:

Given:
1. A paper map of any country in the world with coordinates in meters.
2. GPS readings within this country in Long/Lat (no datum).

How can I find out the entry in Mapinfow.prj (projection file) which
will enable me to perform automatic coordinate conversion from Long/Lat
to meters? If this is country-dependant, is there a table specifying
which projection entry matches which country?

TIA to al responders.

Best regards,

Alex Eshed
