Karl,
Unfortunately the Scalebar tool does not work in the layout window.
But here is a work-around I have been using for years that works quite
effectively.
I have created a .tab file that I call CommonScalebar. I keep it in my
MapInfo data directory. In this file I have several dozen scale bars that I
have created over the years for different purposes. I continually re-use
this file. But here is the basic routine of how I get it into the layout.
Assumptions:
1. Make a layout with a map frame (let's call it MainMap) for which you want
a scale bar
2. Create a scale bar of your choice in the CommonScalebar map window.
3. Zoom in so that the scale bar you just made takes up the entire view.
4. switch to your layout with your MainMap frame
5. Add a new frame with the CommonScalebar map in it.
6. double click on the MainMap frame. This will bring up the Frame Object
properties dialog.
7. From the "scale on paper: 1 in = " text box, copy that number. Close that
dialog box.
8. double click on your CommonScalebar frame to bring up the Frame Objects
dialog box.
9. Paste that number you just copied into the "scale on paper: 1 in = " text
box.
10.Now your CommonScalebar frame is representing the appropriate scale!
I hope this was useful. Write me if you have any problems implementing this
routine.
Cheers!
